The Mértola Biological Station and Territorial Partnerships
The project promoted by the Municipality of Mértola aims to increase the densities of European rabbits and Iberian hares in the territory, with the goal of promoting the sustainability of hunting activities and contributing to the conservation of biodiversity, particularly the fauna that depends on these species for food.
The project is structured in 4 phases:
1st phase: Creation of physical conditions in 4 parks located in the Municipal Hunting Zone;
2nd phase: Placement of animals (European rabbits and Iberian hares) within the parks;
3rd phase: Repopulation of the Municipal Hunting Zone with the animals bred in these parks;
4th phase: Dissemination of the model to other hunting zones in the municipality of Mértola that feel the need to increase their populations of wild rabbits and Iberian hares.
The project includes collaboration with EBM for scientific monitoring of the results.
