Estação Biológica de Mértola
About
EBM Biological Station of Mértola is a Centre for Technology, Valorisation and Transference of Technology (CVTT) in the fields of Biodiversity, Agroecology and Wild Resources, with a special focus on game species, and addresses the need for territorial adaptation to the effects of climate change and vulnerability to desertification risk in Mediterranean semi-arid regions.
EBM is a non-profit, private law association, established on June 18, 2021. It pursues scientific and technological goals within the action domains of the CVTT – Biological Station of Mértola. The institution has expertise in R&D, advanced training, environmental monitoring, biodiversity management and conservation, knowledge transfer to the business sector, and scientific and educational literacy.
The Founding Promoter Members of the EBM Association are:
- BIOPOLIS Association (management organisation of CIBIO, Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources/InBIO Associated Laboratory)
- Município de Mértola
- Universidade do Porto
- EDIA – Empresa de Desenvolvimento e Infraestruturas do Alqueva, S.A.
Located in Mértola, in the Mediterranean region of Southern Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula, in a low-density territorial context particularly vulnerable to climate change and desertification, EBM is a scientific association that aims to promote and transfer knowledge and technology in the fields of Biodiversity, Agroecology, and the Management and Conservation of Wild Resources. It seeks to improve the territory’s and region’s performance in terms of knowledge incorporation, technological intensity, competitiveness, innovation, and value creation, serving as an inspiration for implementing sustainable development models based on preserving and adding value to the natural resources and biodiversity of the territories”.
EBM aims to achieve the following goals:
- Promote the knowledge and technology transfer in the management of natural resources (water and soil), biodiversity, agroecology, the valorisation of native breeds and game species as territorial specialisation assets and factors;
- Empower the business sector in EBM specialisation areas to enhance competitiveness and economic, environmental and social sustainability;
- Stimulate local governance to actively and effectively participate in territorial specialisation processes;
- Increase the attraction, recruitment, and retention of qualified technical staff in the territory;
- Develop a long-term action and environmental monitoring strategy in a Mediterranean territorial context particularly vulnerable to climate change and desertification. This strategy aims to support the knowledge and technology transfer for implementing sustainable development models based on the protection and enhancement of natural resources and biodiversity of the territories.
