Tracking and Monitoring the Golden Eagle
Tracking and Monitoring the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) in the Reguengos Hydraulic Circuit and its Irrigation Block
Scientific Focus Area: Biodiversity
Promoting entity and funding: EDIA S.A.
Team: João Paulo Silva (BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, EBM; principal researcher) and Carlos Pacheco (BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, EBM)
Timeline: November 2023 – June 2026
Location: Alentejo (Municipalities of Évora, Portel, Reguengos de Monsaraz and Redondo) and other areas of activity of the tagged individuals.
The Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is classified with an “endangered” status due to its reduced population size. In the southern part of the country, its distribution is limited to the Alentejo region. This project aims to monitor golden eagles by tagging and tracking individuals with GPS/GSM transmitters within the area covered by the Reguengos Hydraulic Circuit and its Irrigation Block, as well as the remaining area of the Alqueva Multi-Purpose Project (EFMA). Monitoring the species will allow the characterization of the occupied areas throughout the annual cycle, hunting and roosting areas, identification of daily activities, mortality, and reproduction events, as well as the design of conservation measures.
